An Evening with Nick Penny
13th September, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
£10As part of the Nene Valley Festival, we are delighted to be welcoming Northamptonshire author Nick Penny to Lamport for a talk and book signing.
Nick Penny will talk about his new book Call of the Kingfisher, which reminds us of the magic and importance of connecting with nature. The author has walked beside the River Nene at Oundle for four decades, but a chance encounter with a kingfisher on New Year’s Day leads to a deeper relationship with the waterway and woods nearby. The more he looks and listens during the year that follows, the more he sees and hears afresh. The result is an insightful, lyrical book about what can be seen and heard when we approach nature with patience and curiosity.
Nick is a composer and wildlife recordist, and a unique aspect of his book is a QR code at the front that allows the reader to listen to online recordings of natural sounds which he made locally. He’ll
be sharing the sounds of kingfishers, owls, cuckoos and nightingales, as well as celebrating the river itself and some of the writers and naturalists who have lived and worked alongside it. It’s a list that would make any region proud, and includes the writer ‘BB’ (who was born in Lamport), the Fourth Lord Lilford, Charles and Miriam Rothschild, and the great conservationist and communicator Sir Peter Scott.
Above all, Call of the Kingfisher is an invitation to appreciate the beauty of nature, even in the most ordinary places, and to use our ears as much as our eyes when we experience the natural world.
Tickets are £10pp or £5pp for under 18s. There will be the chance to purchase Nick’s book on the night and he will also be signing the book.
Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start.
