Blacksmithing Introductory Course
11th September, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
£150This one day course introduces the basic skills of Blacksmithing, a trade that used to be found in every village and was at the heart of countryside life for hundreds of years. You will learn about managing the forge and heating your steel to around 1200 degrees Celsius. Discover the techniques of drawing down and shaping the metal on the anvil – then bending, forming and quenching your work until it is transformed from a length of steel bar into your own unique hook or candle holder!
The course is limited to just 4 participants so that each person has their own anvil to work on throughout the day. The morning session will allow you to get used to heating and working the metal and by lunchtime you will have forged a rustic style hook. The afternoon will continue to develop your skills and by the end of the day you will have created an impressive spiral candle holder – we will even provide the beeswax candle to go in it!
This day is suitable for everyone; a lot of blacksmithing is about technique and making sure the steel is heated to the right temperature before working it …. not about using heavy hammers and hitting the metal very hard!
Tools, materials and safety equipment are provided for all courses. Participants are simply asked to bring a packed lunch and their own supply of enthusiasm! (We provide tea and coffee during the courses).
