13th September, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Visit the site of Northampton’s lost castle, of which very little remains above ground, but it had a rich and eventful history over several centuries, when it often functioned as the centre of a Kingdom and Empire.
Guided walks of the Castle site and other notable buildings around it, meeting up at the gates of St Peter’s in Marefair.
The Castle was the scene of battles and great events, such as the trial of Thomas Beckett in 1164, the sensation of its day. Parliaments were held here, treaties signed and a King imprisoned. From the time it was built in the early 12th century through to the mid 14th Century Northampton and it castle were at the centre stage of British history. After a fire in the Royal Apartments the Castle went into decline, but continued to play a part in the life of Northampton into the 19th Century, when most of it was demolished to make way for Railway works.
The walk will start at the Norman Church of St Peter’s, and take in Saxon history in the area, as well as many tales from Norman and Plantagenet history. The story of the decline of the castle will be told.
